Portrait
In this picture it was more of a snapshot, capturing a moment in time and not a staged portrait picture. This was taken when the person in the picture wasn't paying attention, and I think it captures a a point in time and a true emotion of the person. During this picture the guy, his best friend and myself were at a lake and a natural park. This was the first time that he had ever been there, and he hadn't been able to just have a day out enjoying himself for quite some time. In the picture I think it captures a simple joy that the guy had at that moment, and I think it also shows almost a childlike happiness that can't be staged. I changed it to black and white because I think it makes the portrait more dramatic. Also with what's going on in the background and all the details I felt that it pulled away from the picture. The black and white makes it more simple and I think reflects upon the portrait.

Night Photography
In these two night pictures I approached each of them differently and was going for a different feel and goal in each one. In the first picture I was at my house and I was messing around with the functions and settings of my camera. It was a little past sunset and there wasn't much light left in the sky. I was wanting a setting where I could leave the shutter open longer and have the colors saturate more. I wanted this effect because I like what the colors do to the picture and I like how when the colors are richer in a night picture one can't always tell it was done at night. In this picture I was without a tripod so the camera is resting on a porch railing. I liked how the clouds were so well defined from the sky and they had a purplish tint. The light from the window was necessary in this picture and I think balanced it well. The color from the light is a nice repeat on the color from the streetlamp. I also had quite a few takes of this picture because I was wanting different effects. I chose the one that I posted because in the back left it shows a car that was driving by and the taillights that were left in the picture due to the shutter being open longer, and I also thought the colors in this particular picture were the best.
In the second picture I was on the top of the rims. I changed the picture to black and white because it was already too dark for there to be much color so I thought the black and white cleaned it up and made it more dramatic. In order to get this picture and others from that night I was on the rims for a couple of hours. I was using a tripod but due to the fact it was windy a lot of the pictures were turning out blurry. I think the black and white also adds to the effect of it being a night picture and captures an element of the city that color can't quite do.
